First of all, a BIG “Hello” to all model railroading fans out there! Lets talk about model track plans. The bottom line is that huge importance needs to be placed on the track plan when it comes to building your model railroad. This important layout will govern where the trains will run and how they will interact with each other. Of course there are many varying options when designing model railway track plans and each design type will predominantly depend on your own personal interests, budget and how much dedicated space you have available. Another big factor that plays a part in choosing a suitable track plan is the types of trains you wish to use and their size etc. The circular continuous running track plan is probably the most popular of all. Generally at various locations along the track there will be side stations that are branched off the main track.

Model Railway Track PlansOn a circular track you can pretty much sit back, open the throttle and enjoy the train as it passes you by. You obviously still have the option of stopping in at one of the stations or reversing and dropping off carriages. Basically just adding a little more interest to the track plan. Another point of interest to keep in mind about the circular type track is that as most of these plans are laid out on a solid base board, the operator has the option of viewing the entire layout, or as some enthusiasts do, they cut a whole in the centre of the base board and sit in the middle. This adds a bit of variance as the operator will only be able to see part of the layout at once, which gives the impression that the trains are actually going somewhere rather than just going in basic circles. At any moment, the operator can simply turn their head and feel as if they are viewing a totally different location on their track layout. In general circular model railway track plans need a decent amount of room to operate in cause they make use of 180 degree curves in order for the train to complete its circuit around the board. In many cases people only have a narrow space available to use and therefore go for an “end to end” layout design as this is more suitable. There is nothing negative about an “End to end” model railroad track plan, in fact they can be extremely interesting and a great deal of fun to play with and operate.

Railway Track PlansA terminal station and goods sidings can also be very popular too enabling a train to be marshaled and guided along the line to the opposite terminal at the other end of the track. Once it arrives at this end it can be re-marshaled and sent back and forth. This kind of layout can provide a lot of interest for the operator and fun for an outside observer, the only downside being that you cant just site back, open the throttle and watch. Again it depends on the operator and their interest. Another option that is even sometimes preferred with an “end to end” layout is rather than having a terminal at each end, is to create the illusion that the train is moving to a location out of sight. This type of track design is better known as a “fiddle yard” design. As an example a train could depart a terminal station, run along the track until it is hidden by a tunnel. Now behind the hills where no one can actually see, there is a set of sidings housing other trains that can be stored or sent out back onto the scene from out of the tunnel.

Whoever is watching the scene will observe different trains coming out of the tunnel, entering the station and going back through the tunnel again which can provide a really great and realistic form of train running. This kind of track layout is very popular in exhibits where audiences need to be well entertained. The combination of model railway track plans are absolutely endless. For example an “End to end” layout doesn’t necessarily need to incorporate fiddle yard at one end and a terminal station at the other. Many folk place fiddle yards at either end with the main viewable area of the model directly in the middle. As I said, the options are endless. This is a fantastic hobby and one that can be enjoyed by literally all ages. Best of luck to you and your new model railway track, and happy railroading!
